About Allies in Hope Counseling

Picture of Heather Sly-Haley. A children's counselor in Salem, Oregon. When working with clients, I see people as unique individuals who are trying to find their own meaning for their lives and a purpose in life. Through therapy we can learn so much about ourselves and our goals which we might not even be aware of up to this point.

Part of my belief in therapy is centered in the idea that each person is capable of reaching their desired self or achieving self actualization. I believe individuals and relationships are trying to find their best possible versions of self.

In my practice I emphasize promoting communication and emotional awareness. I strive to create a safe environment to explore difficult situations and insights with each person. You are the expert about your life and you are allowing me the opportunity to be a part of it for a length of time.

In sessions I focus primarily on the here and now. While we can’t change the past, I believe it is needed to inform our exploration of self.

Education

I have a Master of Science in Counselor Education specializing in Marriage, Couples and Family Counseling from Portland State University. I also have completed a certificate course in Advanced Training in Therapy for Adoptive and Foster Care. Prior to completing my degree, I spent a year working with families and couples struggling with chemical dependency at DePaul Treatment Centers in Portland, Oregon. I am also a certified provider of Circle of Security Parenting™ classes since 2010.  I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Oregon.

Professional Experience

Previously, in my professional experience I worked as a teacher and as a social service worker with Head Start. Through this experience, I learned the value of communication and how challenges within the family affect each person differently.

I witnessed how families who worked together to address these challenges achieved the most long term solutions. I use this knowledge daily in my work with couples and families and previously at DePaul Treatment Centers in Portland, Oregon. From families struggling with addiction, I observed how the whole system of the family/couple benefited from counseling in conjunction with the person struggling with the addiction receiving their own treatment.

I find my background allows me increased awareness and insights into peoples lives. I look forward to working with you.

I am licensed in the State of Oregon (license number C5952). The boards information can be accessed here: Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists.
