Family Counseling

Family Counseling with Heather Sly-Haley at Allies in Hope Counseling
When a family has challenges or conflict, it can seem like nothing will change.

As a trained marriage, couples and family therapist I believe connections, change and successful development can occur when the family participates in therapy together.

I view “family” as a broad term used to include parents, children, grandparents, aunts, friends, partners (current or former) and anyone who is included in the support system of the family.

We are affected both physically and mentally by challenges in the family system. By exploring the patterns and communication within the family we can work to promote connection and discover each member’s self-worth; thus decreasing the challenges.

Family work explores how the whole family is affected; not just one person. Ultimately, this supports a larger picture and longer lasting change. By working together as a family, understanding and awareness can lead to cohesion.

It’s not easy to do any counseling work and I remind clients that it will probably get harder before it gets better. While it is difficult, this can mean a greater longer lasting change is about to occur.

For example, it takes a number of failed attempts at creating a recipe for a meal before it is edible and even more work to make something that’s enjoyable to eat. Just as with the recipe, the knowledge and the understanding achieved from therapy is yours to keep and nobody can take it away from you or your family.
